MINI CHAT WITH SYDNEY PUNKS DEL-SLACKERS
‘Will You Go Out With Me’ is the most recent release from Sydney pop- punk band Del-Slackers which has already seen nearly 2k streams in just over a week. We caught up with the band for a little chat in celebration of their new release which you can view below.
How did you guys meet, get started in music and how did the Del-Slackers come to life?
Dyl (Bass, Vocals) and I (Jack, Vocals, Guitar) met back when I was 16 playing in an old high school band. He booked us to open for his band Ride For Rain at the Chatty Youth Centre. About 6 months later we met Hosher (They/Them, Drums) when they were playing in their old band Viral Eyes at the Valve Bar (RIP).
We were all doing our own thing musically til Hosher and I started jamming out some songs I wrote to record what would eventually make up the first 2 EP’s. During that time I was always sending demos and ideas to Dyl until I eventually convinced him to join Slackers! We have been together just over a year now and its all been super sick, we love similar bands and also each bring our own thing musically to the table.
What are some bands that have inspired you guys as individuals and through your own sound as a band?
Pretty obvious but we love late 90s pop punk! Blink-182, Sum 41, 90s Green Day are some of our favourite bands. Outside of that, I love punk rock bands like Descendents, Black Flag, Gorilla Biscuits, TSOL, Adolescents and the Bad Brains. Hosher is influenced by bands like Thesis (RIP), Amends, Slipknot and Knuckle Puck. Dyl is influenced by Angels and Airwaves, Chunk No Captain Chunk, My Chemical Romance and The Used.
‘Will You Go Out With Me’ is your latest release and we absolutely love it! What was your creative process like when it came to this single? Do you guys just get together and create something there and then or is it more one person will come up with the idea and the rest add?
Every song is a little different! This time Dyl came in with the chorus and we built all around that. Typically Dyl and I have it demo’d before we bring it to the band room and then we work it out there before making a final demo that forms the basis of the recorded version. Another big change for this, is that this is the first time we worked in a studio. We went up to The Grove in the NSW Central Coast to record with Jack Nigro (The Terrys, Surf Trash). The experience was great and taught us so much that we bring back to our demos and song writing!
This is your first release since 2021, the time between then and now what were you up to?
Getting new members! Before it was just myself and Hosh would come to record. We are now a band that write together, record together and get in bed together! Took a bit to write some songs but now were ready for world domination.
Can you tell us one interesting/funny thing about each other?
Hosher is the only funny one but they don’t get a mic.
Where did the name Del-Slackers come from?
We originally wanted to name the band Slackers but it was taken by some ska band. We chucked Del in it because Del means “the” in Spanish and I’m half South American.
What do you have planned for the rest of the year? Any upcoming shows or anything you want to let our readers know about?
We have more music coming and shows coming! Come watch us suck!
