Oh gosh! This was impossibly hard to decide, but here it is (in no particular order)...
Be Your Girl, Teedra Moses - KAYTRANADA
Infectious and upbeat, this track’s production is vibrant and distinct, as can be said for all of KAYTRANADA’s music. It is such a perfect dance track.
Far Nearer - Jamie xx
A song very close to my heart, it transports me back to a pivotal point in my life. Without exaggeration, there are moments when I struggle to listen to it, as the nostalgia is all consuming. This track is a masterpiece.
Me, Myself and I - Beyonce
Picture this, it’s a dreamy Saturday morning… I’m seven, in my living room and of course, ‘Video Hits’ is on the television. ‘Me, Myself & I’ starts to play, with the unforgettable bass line and stand out video clip played in reverse. Some of my fondest memories involve me belting this song out with so much passion at such an early age… I’m quite certain I was too young to even comprehend what the lyrics were about!
Nothing Compares 2 U - Sinéad O'Connor (Prince)
A classic two for one! A combination of the late powerhouse Sinéad O'Connor and written by one of my all time favorite artists - Prince.
Get You - Daniel Caesar
I was drawn to this track by Caesars’ dreamy vocals. The lyrics are so smooth that it took me a few listens to realise what he was actually saying!! Such a clever, cheeky vocal delivery.
Raise Your Weapon - deadmau5
The moment my best friend showed me this song and I remember mentally adding it to this mixtape of ‘favourite songs’ after the first listen. The stand-out haunting vocals as always supported by pure, simplistic production focusing the attention on his complex extended harmonies—quintessential deadmau5.
Want You In My Soul ft. Stee Downes - Lovebirds
One for the ages… a song that holds immense sentimental value for me, resonating deeply with my heart and soul. To me, this song reminds me of summer love in my home country Australia. Wild house parties and balmy drives to the beach.
These Walls - Kendrick Lamar
I could easily add the whole ‘To Pimp a Butterfly’ album to the mixtape. It is such an outstanding body of work, the jazz influences throughout and the use of improvisation in the instrumentation matched by Lamar’s rap/vocal lines creates such a unique multi-layered sound. Also damn sexy! From the outset it feels this way thanks to the intro… if you’ve heard it, you will know what I mean.
The Lady Is a Tramp - Ella Fitzgerald
Jazz has been integrated into my life since day dot. I’m incredibly lucky to have parents who are so passionate about music and introduced me to the genre, then giving me an Ella Fitzgerald album sparking my love for her voice specifically. I know she didn’t write the original but it is the mix of her voice singing this song that means it made the mixtape cut!
Made To Stray - Mount Kimbie
I have so much to say about this song! The structure of this track is incredible. Building suspense from the beginning, as each layer is steadily and subtly added, finally resulting in an explosion of sound and energy when the vocals enter… production perfection! All the sounds fit together so seamlessly. It's at the top of my list of songs to drive to in summer.
