INTERVIEW WITH VOIID AHEAD OF DEBUT ALBUM RELEASE
Following in the footsteps of feminist punk-rock bands before them, Brisbane/ Meanjin band VOIID are a force to be reckoned with. Since forming back in 2015, the four-piece have released a stellar amount of alt-rock knockout tracks that, just like their own idols, are inspiring and paving the way for women in music especially in the Australian music scene for years to come.
“Watering Dead Flowers” is the debut album that the band will put out in the world in two weeks time. We got to catch up with the band for a little Q&A ahead of its release.
You can check everything out below, and don’t forget to pre-order “Watering Dead Flowers” out April 28th and grab tickets to VOIID’s upcoming national tour.
What inspired you to start a band, write music, and really follow that creative path?
One day we all met in an elevator and thought each other looked cool, and soon after realized we had the same middle name. Figured we should either start a band or enter the olympic bobsled team.
How exciting, your debut album “Watering Dead Flowers” will be out soon! What is your favorite track on the album and why?
Without sounding too cheesy, it's impossible to choose. The whole record rules.
What was your creative process like when writing the album?
I think the key was to try and just sit back and let the songs come to us. We’d be at work or something and all of a sudden have an idea and quickly try and record it on voice memos without getting in trouble. When we would get together to write and something wasn’t clicking, Anji would run outside in the yard for a few minutes, swing on the tree, then come back and have lyric ideas.
What’s something you’re most looking forward to and something you're not looking forward to about your upcoming tour?
Playing our album in full. We curated this album so the songs flow on and fit perfectly together and we want to recreate that in our shows. We’re not keen on having to leave the virgin lounge.
Tell us the main inspiration behind the album
A piece of paper on Anjis wall near her bed that reads “water the dirt every day until the flower grows again”.
Can you give us a funny/interesting fact about the band?
Mina never takes her socks off due to overstimulation.
Something you're most proud of as a band since starting out back in 2015?
The fact that we’ve been doing this for many years and haven't lost sight of why this is so important to us.
You all inspire so many girls around Aus with your music, your attitude, and your talents:
Why do you think it is so important to empower and support women in the music industry?
So women will be taken seriously, added to lineups, treated with respect, given space, lifted up, paid properly, spoken to professionally, etc. So they're not groped, assaulted, pushed down, given unsolicited advice, spiked, treated like they know nothing, like they are a token, like they can't do anything. It’s all about the knock on effect.
Who are some women in the industry that inspire you?
Ruby-Jean McCabe, our manager. Katie Krollig, our booking agent.
What are your goals? Where do you see VOIID in 5 years time?
To keep making albums, keep touring and keep growing.
And lastly, the most important question for Kate ..... L7 or Sonic Youth?
Tough question but...L7 for sure.
