INTERVIEW WITH INDIE-POP DUO LOVELOVELOVE

LOVELOVELOVE is an indie-pop project who is made up of two incredible talented producers Jared and Den. The duo who are based in Brisbane, have recently released their debut EP ULTRAVIOLET which is made up of five delectable tracks we know you will have on repeat. Check out the interview we did with the duo below and don’t forget to stream ULTRAVIOLET out now.

Tell us a little about how this project came about, how you guys met, where the name for the project came from and where you draw your main inspiration from.

Heya! We first met through a mutual friend who we both were doing some production & mixing for, but we didn’t start making music together until the winter of 2021. Before music we had a really solid friendship, and we used to hang all the time, surfing, coffee, that sort of thing - weirdly we never really thought or talked about doing music - and then one night we were playing each other some beats and Den began singing over one of the tracks and it sort of happened really quickly and natural and we took it from there…and here we are!

The name is sort of a nod to what we both want to achieve with the project which is simply to bring people together through music and universal experience - in a kind of spiritual or deeper sense we feel like the two of the three ‘LOVE’s is represented by us as individuals, and the third is that sense of something bigger than the sum of the two of us; that through the music we can connect with an audience who are that third entity or ‘LOVE’. SUPER. DEEP. STUFF.

Your debut EP ULTRAVIOLET was released last week which is super exciting - what was the creative process like?

The creative process was different for each song and each of them had their own unique story, but generally across the board the process involved us coming up with a main idea or hook, and we would write out the bones of the songs with a more traditional songwriting mindset. On some of the songs like ‘Good Thing’, ‘Sweater’ and ‘Ultraviolet’, we just wrote as much as we could - and then sort of tag teamed production and writing as the song began to evolve sonically. Inversely, ‘Clover’ and ‘Highway’ were pretty much fully written before we started production. Once the core ideas were down, we would sort of begin production with the idea that everything is malleable and worth trying and we would kind of just sculpt the production over a few weeks, bouncing demo cuts along the way and employing a rough ‘sleep on it’ philosophy’ which kind of helped focus the decisions. Sometimes you can get in this weird headspace when you're producing where you’re so in a bubble that knowing what is and isn’t working can get blurry, so giving songs that day or two to really make calls felt like it really helped the overall process.

The singles you previously released have gained some serious traction from outlets such as Triple J, Music Feeds, and RAGE -  was there one particular outlet that shocked you and made you proud to be featured?

We were honestly shocked by all of them initially, just because it all felt like it was happening so rapidly - we had basically a year of nothing and then in a short period all these amazing platforms were supporting us, it just felt insane! If we had to say one, we’d say RAGE, just because of the associated nostalgia with growing up in Aus and getting up early on a saturday to watch Rage before cartoons - Den remembers sneakily watching it with the volume all the way down to try not wake his parents - core memory for sure.

What is your favorite track on the EP and why?

D: For me it’s hands down ‘Good Thing’, it was the last song we did, so it feels the freshest, but it also just came so easy, and represents where I am in life right now. It just has this beautiful message of ‘you don’t need to prove yourself’ and that’s what I feel like I need right now haha!

J: ‘Clover’ would have to be mine, it’s got that personal touch and it feels special to have a track about losing family - It’s about our grandparents who are no longer with us, so yeah having that more vulnerable and heart-felt touch on the EP is super special to me.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard it before?

We’d say we're somewhere between indie-pop and alt-pop. We like to think we’ve sort of mixed modern pop songwriting with a more indie focused production which relies on mixing unique ideas with strong commercial hooks. We sort of use COIN or LANY to give people a reference for similar artists, but who knows if that's even accurate! Every song on our EP is so different and has its own colors, so yeah broad is better!

Do you have any more exciting things happening this year that you can share?

We have our first headline show in May in Brisbane, which is massive for us! We’ll be launching the EP live with some amazing support acts, so that’s a big one for sure. After the show we’ll be straight back to the studio to finish a few singles off for July/August. We’re also thinking about dropping a music video for ‘Good Thing; off the EP so that’s on the cards too.

If you could play at any venue in Australia, which one would you choose and why?

Probably a hometown show at Brissy Riverstage. We’ve both been to so many amazing gigs there, and the outdoor area vibe brings such a different feeling to the indoor venues. Top pick!

Where do you hope to see LOVELOVELOVE in 5 years time?

We both would love to see ourselves dropping some bigger projects on a label and touring them across the world - one of our goals is to travel the globe so if we can do that on the back of bringing people through music that would be so so special. We’re both also crazy about surfing and the outdoors so we’d be lying if we said we wouldn't be planning a few surf trips too. We’d love to make music our full-time living so if we can achieve that on the back of some hard work we’d be more than satisfied.
