Rich Webb Shares 4 Favourite Songs About A Location Following Release Of New Single ‘Brunswick St’

Distinguished alt-country artist Rich Webb has released his best work to date in the form of a terrific single titled ‘Brunswick St’ that tells a story. This is the artists first release of 2023, following up from his latest album “RIGHT!”.
“It’s a story song. I was walking down Brunswick Street and randomly bumped into a pretty wild dude I used to run with back then, who I hadn’t seen for years. He was still going hard and it was great to see him. There was some common ground and a lot came flooding back. It’s about the way people and places change for you, but you also carry a bit of them forward with you too. I still get a tingle of excitement walking down there, and I think that’s because I experienced such a great time in my life on that bit of pavement. Always been a fun place for me, and I tried to catch that in the song. It’s still a cracking strip – get yourself over there!” Rich described.

Rich Webb has shared with us his favourite four tracks about a location to go with his stellar song about Brunswick St.

Nutbush City Limits – Ike and Tina Turner – https://youtu.be/tFMXV2xqW8o

Where do you start with this beauty – gnarly distorted riffing guitar, an utterly fabulous vocal from the legend Tina Turner, crazy synthesizers, beautiful horns and drums that sound like they didn’t bother taking them out the box. It’s totally brilliant and makes you want to punch the air. Tina wrote this gem about her rural hometown Nutbush in Tennessee apparently. If it’s anything like the song, I’ve got to get there!

  London Calling – Clash –  https://youtu.be/EfK-WX2pa8c

I love London. I love the Clash, well a fair chunk of what they did. This is one of my faves of theirs and it’s ferocious and quite spectacular. For all the riffing loveliness around it, this track is carried by an enormous, gorgeous, pounding bassline as good as you will hear anywhere. Love the desperate pack dog whoops too and he lives by the river. I’ll have a bit of that thanks.

From St Kilda to Kings Cross – Paul Kelly - https://youtu.be/AV1FW_FCjx8

When I arrived here from London this was one of the first songs to totally knock me over. When I started playing in bands, the run from Melbourne to Sydney became a regular occurrence, and often ended up on Oxford St and sometimes on to the Cross at any hour. He’s right about St Kilda Esplanade too – it’s one of the finest places in the world to watch the sun come down, including from what was the big old bay window at The Espy.

  Wichita Lineman – Glen Campbell – https://youtu.be/Q8P_xTBpAcY

Glen Campbell sang a load of songs about places, most often, like this one, written by Jimmy Webb. This is one of my faves because it does loneliness and missing your family as good as any I know. Love the bass intro from Carol Kaye and the way the strings mimic telephone lines. It’s such a complex song while putting you firmly in the shoes of a guy parched in the heat somewhere in the middle of desert, by himself miles from anywhere and up a big ladder fixing telephone lines, but dreaming all the time of getting home. Fabulous piece of songwriting.
