‘Best. Interview. Ever. I am on the road quite often so I feel like I’m constantly listening to music, looking for new music and living my best main character life. Here are my top 10 (and some extras!) road trip songs:’
Back In Your Head // Tegan and Sara
This song has been a roadtrip song for years and years. I used to ride my bike along the fields in West Flanders to go to neighbouring towns and scream this song as loud as I could. I’m actually currently writing this from my hometown house in Belgium while I’m visiting and I was listening to this song on my bike on said bike track yesterday. It’s such a nostalgic song on so many levels.
Blue Bones (deathwish) // Billy Nomates
I’ve been obsessed with this song (and artist) since the first second I’ve heard this. My friend Stella played this song at work for the first time and I remember running to the iPad to make sure I could save it to my phone (yes, I’m thát boomer who forgets that Shazam exists.) – I did save it to my phone as ‘dead fish’ so it took me a while to find my reunion with it. Ever since then, I’ve been loving every Billy Nomates soundtrack. What an incredible artist.
Change // The War On Drugs
No road trip playlist can exist without a War On Drugs song, full stop.
Automatic // Lake Street Dive
Each time I hear this song, no matter what mood I was previously in, I leave a happy person. Such a good song to drive to and just sing along.
Padam Padam // Kylie Minogue
Kylie can do no wrong - especially not 2023 Kylie. I first heard Padam Padam when I was on my way to support 10cc in Geelong and my housemate Sophie and I listened 30 times in a row. You definitely won’t fall asleep behind the wheel when listening to Padam Padam, at least not with Sophie and me in your car because we will sing along, knowing every lyric.
Bootleg Firecracker // Middle Kids
The latest Middle Kids track probably gained 200 streams in the first day by me only. Such a great song, I’ve said this before but Hannah’s songwriting is just phenomenal and Middle Kids are one of my favourite Australian bands. They’ve proven it once again with this track for sure.
This Must Be The Place // Talking Heads
David Byrne and Talking Heads have the genes of roadtrip music programmed into their system. I had a hard time choosing which song to put into this list so I went with my favourite one.
Love Is // Mega Bog
If you need to gain energy whilst driving, I highly recommend Love Is by Mega Bog. My best friend Jazz once tried to cheer me up by sending me this song and I haven’t stopped listening. I also admire Erin Bergy as an artist and person a lot - I once did a School of Song workshop with her and think 3 songs that made it to my album were written during that month.
Punk Rock Loser // Viagra Boys
I listen to this song while I’m on my bike so often and álways scream ‘I’M LOOSE’ – people in Northcote must think I’m definitely not right in the head. I just love the whole Viagra Boys catalogue.
Everybody Wants To Rule The World // Tears For Fears
If you want to feel euphoric whilst being the road, you just have to listen to Everybody Wants To Rule The World by Tears For Fears. I could listen to the intro alone for days on end.
