Second Idol are no strangers to writing some powerful, 90’s sounding, fantastic tracks that make you keep playing on repeat after the first listen because you just can’t get enough. Being well known in the local scene and also having done community work with charities like Queer As Fvck and Baylin’s Gift, there’s no denying just how great they really are. Now the band are back at it again with a truly captivating track “Dear X”, taking alt-rock to the next level with total guitar infusion, contrasting soundscapes, and amazing vocals.'Dear X’ is ultimately about loss. For the listener, it could refer to death or a loss of love. When I wrote the lyrics I saw it as an interaction between two individuals, or a monologue about how mental health can impact friendships; how they can be chipped away when one has depression and anxiety. The title could be interpreted to address an ex-lover or partner, but for me, Dear X' is about emotional illiteracy. I was inspired by how the illiterate were instructed to sign their name with an 'X'. This person I'm referring to, this friend in 'Dear X' is incapable of emotional sensitivity and empathy. Sonically, 'Dear X' works to our strengths of interweaving melodies, contrasting walls of sound, and heavy fuzz.” Vocalist and guitarist Kate Olivia explains.
A hefty bass line that takes control straight away becomes a strong undertone for the band’s unique guitar sounds, and strong vocals that build the verse up to a climax before slamming into an instrument driven chorus that honestly sounds like it came straight off a Siouxsie & The Banshees album. The solid rhythm from the bass and drums combine to create a solid bottom layer while the guitar and vocals work separate but together to create this alternative, shoe-gaze esque sound that Second Idol are known for. It’s another fantastic track to add to the band's discography - everything they release is never a disappointment and I’m always excited to see what they do next.Second Idol will be celebrating their release with a single launch on the 9th of September at Factory Floor.
