Redhook Deliver Debut Album “Postcard From A Living Hell”
If you don’t know who Redhook is by now, then you are undoubtedly missing out on one of the best Sydney alt-rock bands around at the moment. From their steady thread of much loved releases to their energetic live shows, Redhook proves just how great they are with the amount of tireless effort , and talent that they put into their work. This is a group that we at Electric Dreams Media have fallen in love with over the years, and you will too.
Coming off of the great success of their EP “Bad Decisions” back in 2021, the band have FINALLY dropped their highly anticipated debut album “Postcard From A Living Hell” and it was so worth the wait. The band's previous singles 'Imposter' feat. Yours Truly, 'Soju' feat. Sly Withers, 'SAY' and 'Jabberwocky' were all added to full rotation on triple j as well as gaining international air time in the UK.
Opening up the album is the instantly catchy “Postcard Xo'' that is completely driven by a tasty guitar riff which adds that extra something to the sound. Driving forcefully, featuring dark lyrics and a grueling soundscape, it welcomes listeners into the nightmarish hellscape that is “Postcard From A Living Hell”.
Drifting off into “Jabberwocky” which continues to carry dark tones and holds a sinister meaning within the lyrics, but quickly turning into a testament of resilience within the strong surges of the guitars, and the quality drums. “Off With Your Head” has a more metal approach and packs a lot of power through the instruments, and emotion through its vocals.
“The Critic” is a relatable anthem that will make you want to scream the lyrics out loud with everything in you. With the potent melody, hefty guitars, and effective vocals, “The Critic” is easily a favourite from the album. Next up is “Imposter” Ft. Yours Truly which is an incredible track to say the least that features phenomenal vocals from Yours Truly vocalist Mikaila Delgado that perfectly intertwines with Emmy Mack’s, and creates this fierce atmosphere underneath the heavier guitar melody, and hard hitting drums. “Soju” is another great collab which features Perth band Sly Withers and has such a fun melody in the chorus that consumes you, and will be a fan favourite at live shows with the amount of energy and scream worthy lyrics.
(chaotic, aggressive, power house is how you would sum up “Psych Vs. Psych” with its intense screams, dynamic vocals, searing guitar strums, and loud drums that are mixed well with classic Redrook electronic sounds to create a frenzied soundscape.
“Low Budget Horror” has been a favourite since its release last year, erupting with powerful screams throughout and a driving force of instruments that makes for the ultimate killer track.
An electronic rhythm, and catchy melody is what makes up “An Intervention” underneath the solid drums that are one of the high points of the track, as they are loud and prominent all around. “Inarticulate” Ft. The Faim is a much more softer sounding track on the album, strong vocals from the artists bring this together and hold huge power to the lyrics, which make for a bittersweet tone that is honestly perfect. Closing out this masterpiece is “SAY” which is just a cherry on top of this hell soundscape, and the best track to draw this incredible album to the end. Featuring Redhook’s signature sound that we all know and full heartily love - the catchy as fuck alt-rock rhythm and electronic sounds lying underneath the surface, and with the ever so compelling lyrics, and lively vocals - it’s sensational.
Vocalist Emmy Mack always perfectly captures the Living hell aspect of life in her lyrics which many people can relate to, and that is completely what this album is, like the deadly sins, it’s the hellish aspects of life decorated in the electronic, catchy grooves of Redhook’s sound.
“Postcard From A Living Hell” is the perfect debut album, and everything that we truly wanted, and needed from them. It showcases all of the members talent, and hard work throughout every track, and we recommend you check it out now.
