Interview with Alt-Rock Band Satin Cali
“One Of These Days” is the punchy new single from alt-rock band Satin Cali which just goes to show that Wollongong has a strong line of pure talent coming out from within the depths.
If you haven’t heard of Satin Cali, the four-piece are known for their modern rock tracks, selling out their headlining shows, and sharing the stage with bands such as The Terry’s, Bakers Eddy, and The Debbies.
Electric Dreams Media got the chance to do a little Q&A with the band and you can check that out below and don’t forget to stream the shit out of “One Of These Days” - out now everywhere!
Tell us about your new single “One Of These Days”, the inspiration behind it and what it means to you.
‘One of these days’ is a pretty sentimental one for us. Zac had come up with the chorus after a string of bad luck had been thrown our way and we were in a period of uncertainty regarding not just the band, but life in general and the direction we were all heading. So, It is definitely inspired from our own life experiences and remembering to never give up when things get tough or seem impossible. As cheesy as that sounds, it really is a song we hold dear to our hearts and keeps us motivated.
Where did the name Satin Cali come from?
Satin Cali actually came from a set of twins named Kate and Sally our guitarist has known since he was a kid. He overheard another friend calling them “Satin Cali” whenever they would arrive at a party or event and he adopted calling them Satin Cali whenever they were together. When it came time to find a band name, we were struggling big time to settle on something. Isaac actually worked with Sally and as we were discussing our band name Sally had gone on a break with Isaac and he just casually called her “Satin Cali” as he normally would and threw it out there on the group chat. We loved it immediately and we were called Satin Cali from that moment on.
Talk us through the creative process for the new track.
Our creative process varies nearly every song we create. ‘One of These Days’ was a short verse into chorus for the longest time Zac had written. After sidelining it for a few months we decided to go through potential ideas and found it in a set of voice memos we had. Instantly recognizing the massiveness of the chorus we spent around 3 hours working it out as best we could. After we had the bare flesh and bones figured out we went for a pre-production session with Jack Nigro; he had moved a few key elements around to give it a more structured feel and make it slightly more of a mature sound from what we have recorded previously. So it was a huge collaborative effort from all involved.
What is your favourite thing about playing live?
Our favorite thing to do without a doubt is to play live. Each member are big lovers of live music and the energy live music can bring to you. Our main philosophy when playing live is to play each and every show with as much intensity and energy as possible to make sure we are giving the people who paid their hard earned dollars to come and watch us the best experience possible. So our favourite part of playing live is seeing how stoked the crowd is after we finish. We love it!
Can you share a fun fact about the band?
The band formed after Isaac was looking for a lounge for his apartment. One of Isaac’s friends has mentioned that Danny (Drummer) was selling one. Isaac went to Danny’s place to check the lounge out and noticed a drum kit in the corner of the house and asked if he could play. Danny said he could and so they started a band that same week. - P.S Isaac never bought the lounge lol.
What bands are currently inspiring you?
Right now we are digging bands like The Terrys, Highline, Sam Fender, DICE, Pacific Avenue, Dear Seattle, Violent Soho and Late 90’s. They are all seriously talented bands and ones we are cranking on the regular.
Where do you hope to see the band in 5 years time?
Like any band who takes great pride in what they do and has a genuine passion for music, we hope that the sky's the limit for us and the next 5 years are filled with amazing experiences and being recognised for the hard work we have been putting in. But honestly, as long as our music continues to be enjoyed by people, inspires people and helps anyone out through those difficult days then we would be more than happy to be anywhere. As long as we get to continue playing music, we will always be chuffed.
