INTERVIEW WITH 3-PIECE BAND SAILING IN SPACE

Recently, we got to catch up with local Sunshine Coast band Sailing In Space as they celebrate their recent release ‘Bad Company’ which was dropped last month. Coming to life with a whole lot of energy, infectious hooks , and their unique sound see how the band brought their new track to fruition by viewing the interview below.

How did this project start and how did the name Sailing In Space come to life?

Dylan came up with the name in high school after people had told him his “head is in the clouds.” His reply was…..Im not just in the clouds, Im Sailing In Space. It's about embracing a crazy dream and not letting people tell you no. After refining the sound and vision for the band, while searching for other band members unsuccessfully, his younger brother Jesse brought him a song he wrote and that was our first single “Stubborn”. We performed at lots of open mics and local shows as a duo and were told many times to add a drummer. After playing with a few different drummers, we were lucky enough to find Bailey and add him to the band in 2022.

Tell us about your newest single ‘Bad Company’ - what is it about, what is the meaning behind it, and how did you go about the creative process?
Bad Company was written after Dylan was stuck in a depressive spiral in his own head. He went for a walk on the beach with a friend and it helped him find hope. The song is about being your own worst enemy and then finding help from friends to get out of your own way. We wrote the song initially with Tim Aitken of Sametime (another duo of brothers writing pop music. From the Sunshine Coast but currently making waves in Brighton, England). We then finished the song with the help of upcoming producer and songwriter Oskar Campbell (Formerly of Lounge). The song was Mixed and Mastered by Rhys Zacher of Spinlight Studios.

When it comes to songwriting, where do you mostly draw your inspiration from?

We cover themes in our music that range from addressing our own mental health and addiction struggles, to wanting to break from societal norms that we observe growing up as two awkward, non typical Sunshine Coast guys who don't surf or party (too hard).

What is something you absolutely love about being a musician and something that you hate about it?

We love the energy of playing live shows. We love when people resonate with our music. When something that seems so personal and specific can relate so closely to someone else's experience.
We hate writers block and trying to find our audience in a crowded market.

Do you have any hobbies outside of music?

Jesse does Boxcercise, Dylan is a disability support worker and is passionate about recovery from addiction, and Bailey was a volunteer fire-fighter and runs his own YouTube page that covers advice for other upcoming drummers and musicians.

What venue would you absolutely love to play at and why?

Small picture: The Brightside in Brisbane, because we've seen so many great shows there and it's a great venue.

Big Picture: Eaton's Hill Hotel supporting a BIG act like Peach PRC or Simple Plan.

What are your plans for 2024? Will we be getting more music, more shows? Let everyone know where they can find you guys!

We have another single coming soon called NEVER Getting Better. We're VERY excited about releasing that song into the world. We're writing alot of new music and are planning an East Coast tour for the second half of the year. You can find us @sailinginspaceofficial on Instagram :)
