Fresh onto the scene, Australian artist Katy Denney shows more than promise with the release of her debut single ‘Never Thought I Would Miss You’ which showcases the artist's talents in full form and has us super excited for everything she does in the future. Read the mini chat we had with the artist below.
Congrats on the release of your debut single ‘Never Thought I Would Miss You’! How exciting! It’s such a good release. Can you talk us through your creative process for the song?
Thank you! It’s been a cool couple of days. For ‘Never Thought I Would Miss You’ the creative process began with the melody and rhythm. I knew I wanted the off-kilter rhythm and needed a melody that would balance it out. A lot of production for this song happened quickly, I’m pretty sure there’s a phone recording of my guitar in there somewhere! At the time I was thinking about the realization that I missed people I thought I never would’ve. And that began the writing process. I finalized the production with Leon (Seenandan). Once we had the clock ticking sound we knew it was done.
Can you share a little bit about the meaning behind the single.
The song was written from the perspective of moving forward, but missing the past. Missing a place that you left. It is downbeat for sure, but for me, I think there’s optimism in the song; realizing you miss someone sucks, but once you know that, you can decide what happens next.
Have you always been wanting to jump into the music scene, create your own music? etc. Why now?
To be honest, probably yes, but it didn’t click with me until I was around 15. That’s when I started writing songs. I’m lucky that growing up there was always a lot of music about. I feel like this song is a long time coming haha, but I feel really good about it. And timing, what can I say, right now just feels right.
Who are your biggest inspirations when it comes to creating your sound?
Oh I’m going to have to say Troye Sivan and Ed Sheeran. I was properly obsessed with Troye Sivan’s album Bloom. I still am to be honest. But I think I’m always going to have a little bit of that Springsteen band rock in me.
Did you have a few songs written before this release and if so, why did you choose ‘‘Never Thought I Would Miss You’ to be released first. What was going through your mind?
Yeah, there were some songs. I tend to write a lot more than I produce so there were a couple back-burners. I’m really proud of this one (‘Never Thought I Would Miss You’) and I think it kind of sums up the last couple of years for me. Personally, I realized I can miss things, but not have it wreck the present.
Well you’ve done the scariest part, and released your first song out into the world, and it truly is amazing! Do you have any plans to release more this year?
I do! I hope to release another track later this year, then an EP next year.
